Chocolate Orange Cake
Recipe Created by Mary Malizia Evans

You will need:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
3 tbsp oil
1 egg
2-1/2 tbsp Cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp orange zest
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
1-2/3 cup chocolate chips

What to do:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and cocoa. In a smaller bowl, whisk together milk, oil, egg, vanilla, and zest. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Mix in the chocolate chips. Pour the batter into a greased 8” round pan. Bake 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake sit for about 5 minutes, then run a knife around the edge before turning it out onto a cooling rack. When cake is completely cooled, add icing.

Icing

You will need:
1/2 cup (one stick) butter (softened)
1 tsp vanilla
1-1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 tbsp cocoa
orange zest to taste

What to do:

In a mixer cream the butter alone. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, and vanilla and mix with the lowest setting on your mixer until combined. Add milk and beat until smooth. Once the mixture is the texture you want, add zest and combine. Now your icing is ready! Just remember to let your cake cool before icing it. Enjoy!

This newsletter has been created for you by a very special Maiden Spirit group in their third year together: Ilsa, Carmella, Naomi, Katie, Mary, and Stephanie! These amazing girls want to share the support and empowerment they have received in Maiden Spirit with their communities. Inspired by strong women from history who have worked to create change, and from inner guidance, they have determined a girl empowering message to give to the world. Please support this project!

Our Message to the World by Katie Nock

A Billboard for Maiden Spirit

by Katie Nock Our mission in Maiden Spirit this year is to send a message to our world! We want to empower women’s rights, teach people about the feminine face of God, and let every girl know that she is unique and special no matter how what she looks like. Through this newsletter we are focusing on getting the word out to the community that we are planning to create and design a billboard that will present our message out to the world. We want the world to know that every girl is special and that every girl is blessed. We want to thank all of our gods, goddesses, and spirits for putting us on earth and giving us the gift of life. How Maiden Spirit Changes Lives by Carmella Gemmato

Some girls’ lives consist of reading fashion magazines, following boys around like they’re just the most important thing in the world, and tracking celebrity gossip. In today’s world, girls are even mean to each other because the world is so hostile to girls.

Maiden Spirit is a program that is designed to help girls understand and try to change the hostile way the world treats girls. It also teaches girls about their true beauty and their Wise Woman Within.

Maiden Spirit can change lives because it teaches girls that the most important things in life are having fun and doing things you love to do and have a passion for….not looking like a skinny super model or having a serious relationship with a boy just because your friends pressure you into it.

Maiden Spirit can change the life of any girl in our world who is at all exposed to the so-called “real world”. It has certainly changed my life, and the lives of every girl I’ve met who has gone through the program.

Maiden Spirit is truly a miracle.

Maiden Spirit helped me by telling me that it is okay to be myself and it is okay to say, “I am me, I am here, notice me.” Being in Maiden Spirit reminds me that it is okay to be free and to find my voice. I can say anything I want with out being told that I am wrong. I don’t have to wear tons of make-up to say I am beautiful. I have true beauty and don’t have to be fake and say, “I am pretty with thousands of dollars worth of make-up!” Being YOURSELF is better than pretending to be someone you want to be.

In Maiden Spirit I helped to create a cable access TV show called TRUE BEAUTY. It is about a few girls sharing about how to be them selves. We talk about influences from the media telling us girls to get thinner. The point of this show is that women and girls aren’t pretty because they are thinner, wearing make-up, or because they are wearing some dress. They are pretty because of who they are inside.

Maiden Spirit is such a wonderful experience. When I got my FIRST MOON we learned that it is a wonderful thing and that it should be celebrated. I was also more aware and prepared. They told me that the women in my life would be there for me and the group would be too, and if I had a question I could come to any of them to talk. I love Maiden Spirit!! I encourage every young girl to join.

A brief interview:

Tracey: How has participation in Maiden Spirit make a difference for you?

Ilsa: It was helpful to witness another girls First Moon celebration and to see how wonderful it is.

Tracey: Which teaching do you remember that was helpful to you?

Ilsa: It was helpful to learn about symbols that are special to girls like the moon, the color red, and the butterfly.

Tracey: What have you enjoyed about your rite-of-passage?

Ilsa: The support of my mom, grandma, and women in my life made the experience wonderful, especially having the support of my mom.

Tracey: What would you like to do for your family First Moon Celebration?

Ilsa: I’m planning to invite all the girls from our group, grandma, aunts and others. I would like it to take place outside in a garden like place. I’m either going to wear white or red sparkly dress and I want everyone else to wear red. I haven’t sat with my mom yet to plan the details.

Tracey: How did you share your news with your dad?

Ilsa: My mom shared about my first moon with my dad. This was okay. However, my dad shared the news with my brothers and this upset me. I wasn’t ready to share with them quite yet. I was angry, but I’m okay now.
